Assessment Requirements

Annual assessment is required. Options include:

  • Standardized Test

Nationally norm-referenced standardized achievement examination, once each year, for every child ages 7 through 16 (and ages 16–17 where the initial report was filed after the child turned 16) who is not enrolled in public school. The superintendent and the person in charge of instruction must agree on the specific examination, its administration, and its location — Minn. Stat. §120A.22 subd. 11(a). Results are retained with the home school's records, not filed with the district.

  • Parent Subject Assessment

Where the chosen examination does not cover every subject area in §120A.22 subd. 9, the parent assesses the child in the uncovered areas — §120A.22 subd. 11(b). This supplementary duty applies only to a parent who neither holds a valid Minnesota teaching license nor is directly supervised by a license holder (subd. 10, clauses (1)–(2)).

  • Accreditation Exemption

A child receiving instruction from a nonpublic school, person, or institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized under §123B.445 or by the commissioner is exempt from §120A.22 subd. 11 entirely — subd. 11(d). MDE recognizes one accrediting agency for home schools; accreditation is optional and most Minnesota home schools are not accredited.
